opinion
For Fantastic Christoph Lode has probably always had something left, for in his two historical novels, which excludes real things. Therefore it is not entirely surprising that he has now completely turned to the genre.
The world in which the city is Bradost is one of our later centuries, I suspect the eighteenth / nineteenth, ajar. There are quite a bit of technology, not least the giant Airships that float across the sky. Everything is moved by means of ether, a chemical substance that was at least not yet defined in detail or shown. But nevertheless the inhabitants of the magic is not alien, just as beings who live on it and those who walk in the shade. But more and more of these creatures have already left the world and it seems that albums, vampires and ghouls just a figment of the imagination. Even the great Phoenix, who watched over the city, has disappeared about ten years ago and has left a mess.
Lady Sarka has taken over the city by force and are no longer the scepter from his hand. It is a beautiful woman who knows exactly what she wants. With a vicious and very intelligent character, she manages well, to conceal their true nature. But their actions speak for themselves.
order it has gathered a small band of people, which seem to flow more old blood. Umbra, for example, can go through the shadows. Or Corvas, which is in contact with the crows, and so the eye and the ear of the city. Now is also Jackon landed with her and she will not let him go more quickly because it will constitute their biggest weapon.
So in terms of the world and is the acting characters, even the idea and the plot could be the story is not perfect. Not only that some elements are similar to steampunk, which comes as a (sub) genre in fashion, even the characters are extremely well thought out and interesting.
lack of imagination is not even the plot is strictly their way and white with one or another surprise twist. And yet it is able to "The Last Dream Wanderer" do not bind to the reader of each line.
It is once again at the superficiality with which the action is said that the lack of depth of the characters and simply to the flair that is missing here entirely. Things are only named, not shown. No facial expression or gesture tells little stories. No areas, buildings or objects are described in more detail. As Liam sent to the port of airships to deliver a message to see that (without quotes) like this: When Liam came to the harbor, launched one of the vessels. The direct route, he went to the addressee and the message conveyed to the unfortunate. How about there? What hears, sees, tastes, Liam?
This is just one of many examples. The palace remains as gray as the road Bradosts. This, however, survived the act does not, it drags itself forward and can not be with what is actually intended for them and for what it has all the facilities. This is really a shame.
addition, the characters are created but failed, but unfortunately by that act but again very stereotypical. This is all before me in the few female figures - have noticed - there are at least three. Whether the effect the impending love story between Liam and Vivana was a good idea so, I doubt it. There are just too little reason and evidence, and finally everything is so hush hush, it is incredible. However, sufficient only to look at the blurb of the follow-up to see that the relationship will play a major role. But it simply lacks the foundation and should have shown much more detailed.
is all in all it is a novel about a very readable history, but tends to be large and superficial gray remains. The lack of reference to the reader prevents a perfect dive and would not be the unusual characters and the plot easy to digest, you'd unselected the book aside.
