The world has changed and is largely in ruins. How this is done, do not know R, it also does not know how long it is since he died and rose again to be a walking corpse. R is a zombie and it does not matter much. Only his memory, as in his name or remember what he was before, it lacks. He feels that he is different than his fellows, mostly standing around in the deserted airport and moan.
And the hunger for Life, who comes over every few days, brought him into doing things he will not do. With his best friend M and a few others, he preys on the living. Their goal: the brain, because with each bite flow memories, thoughts and feelings about the zombies.
One day, the zombies attacked a group of young people and kills the leader of R Perry. Whose thoughts turn to R on it and when he sees the blonde Julie, it has happened to him. For she and Perry had a pair and R is now everything to get the young woman alive. She teaches him the things he once knew and R downright hungry for it.
He starts things to question, and sparked a process that would be able to change anything seen so far. But there are beings who want to prevent just that.

Cover

The cover was created by Kat Menschik, a Berlin-based illustrator. Born in 1968, Communication Design features for newspapers and illustrated books. From 1996-2000 she was co-publisher of the comic book publishing company "millions". She now works as a freelance illustrator in Berlin. She has a daughter. A very interesting and informative interview with the artist can HERE be found.
The cover of the novel is certainly a matter of opinion. I like it and after reading I must say that it also fits. It has been custom made just for "My pale friend. With respect to the original wins the German cover, even if it receives but rather the touch of a children's book. Unfortunately, this is also a wrong impression and it is a pity that the story has to fight for recognition. But this one is even in the genre - used - in both.

opinion

The novel is based on a short story, the title "Iam A Zombie Filled With Love" and with HERE can be found in English. Isaac Marion regretted his decision to have turned it into a novel, not sure. Already translated into 16 languages and sold to Hollywood, he now draws wide circles.
It took me some courage to take up this novel, because although I am having all kinds of love stories, but this cover and blurb seemed a rather unspectacular story noted. But after a few pages - is about the Sample advised at this point - it became apparent that the author knows anything about his craft.
Isaac Marion has managed to create a more mundane subject a half-philosophical, socio-critical novel, which, in retrospect, actually is not primarily of zombies.
R has been a young man, as "the curse" has hit him and he wished he knew more about it. His inner strength, its attachment to the life and thoughts that you give someone who is barely able to form complete sentences, do not feel competent to make the charm of this work. Combined with the truly compelling linguistic dexterity first get some superficial happenings awful lot depth.
Julie grew up in an extreme world. And even though everything seems to be only worse, and they undergo a daily closely linked drill must, she has kept her humanity. At the same time it is also a young woman left, which has its own aspirations. The narrator of the novel never switches over to her, but her character was, by how she sees R and what they told him, given a lot of personality.
The love story never stands in the foreground. Rather, both are fascinated by each other, because both do not behave the way they really should. In addition, R has Erin Perry voltage part in some years, in which Julie grew up. There is a hesitant, and then later a violent kiss, but no superficial romance, no hand-holding and Co. Anybody who do not like something, it is nonetheless accessible. The relationship lives of Rs straight side, rather very much longing held that not even necessarily applies only to the other person, but also what it represents.
most fascinated I was of M, the best friend of our protagonist. Never again the narrative perspective is changed to him, yet this man / zombie looks very lifelike and three-dimensional. The former playboy and womanizer is more than obvious, yet it seems to be a guy with the you can steal horses. He has, as they say, the heart in the right place.
As for violence, it is this natural. But rather subtle and never drifting into a conscious or unconscious Splatter direction. Even if the brain R Perry draws from his pocket and eats - he has a little of it saved for later - has nothing repulsive. I even caught, as I hoped he would do just that. For every bite is followed by a reminder that, like a huge flash illuminates a dark night the story, one part breaks and other violent drives.
Although they only see this once, go and R and Perry a relationship. The one who is dead and wants to live again and the other, the lives and death wishes. What an absurd combination - that works!
"My pale friend" is one of those novels that grabs one and forces you to read the entire story in one go. Although it still here and there are some minor criticisms - which I list them because they are too unbedeutetnd - this covers a wave and tears with absolutely convincing.
The only thing for which I'm thinking, is the film adaptation. Because I do not think honestly that you pack into a DAS even halfway convincing film can. Therefore, all who are interested in R and Julie's history, draw on each case to the book.
Absolute Recommended Reading!
